Humidifiers:  During heating season, as the air expands, it’s constantly drying out. It is necessary to replenish that moisture in the air – it is good for everything from your sinuses to your wood furniture & floors!  You can regulate it with a humidistat which is included with your humidifier.  Humidifiers do require yearly maintenance as you must change the humidifier pad at the beginning of every heating season.
Dehumidifiers: In the summer, humidity levels are high as a supplement to air conditioning.  Dehumidifiers are typically used in basements & below grade rooms where humidity is retained due to lack of ventilation.  You want to regulate it with a humidistat which is included with your humidifier.
Important:  A dehumidifier will not solve the problem of water in your basement. If the walls of your basement are porous and water comes into your basement, a dehumidifier is NOT the answer – that would require waterproofing or even property re-grading.
